KENYANA'S PICK!
HARLEY'S PICK!
This book was so beautifully written. It takes place beginning in 18th century Ghana and follows two branches of a family tree as the family (over time) makes its way to America. Each character gets their own chapter, and while that can seem intimidating for a reader, it worked perfectly for the story this book told. Gyasi uses the parallel family trees to show how slavery impacted families for generations. Homegoing is skillfully written and I couldn’t put it down once I started reading it.
Content warning: themes of sexual assault, abuse, slavery, and racism
ROMAN'S PICK!
In a follow-up to her spell-binding debut novel, Homegoing, Yaa Gyasi has another hit with Transcendent Kingdom. Featuring a layered and nuaced look at grief, faith, and isolation, this book will leave you reeling: in the best possible way. The story follows Gifty, a second-generation Ghananian-American who is completing her PhD at Stanford. Largely this has been done on her own, as she was abandoned by her father, lost her brother to opioids, and can't get her mother out of bed due to the pervading grief. As Gifty gets closer to finishing her program, she grapples with her past and seeks to rewrite her future.
